Athboy Development Forum: Our Story

Athboy Development Forum CLG (ADF) was formed to promote social, economic, cultural and educational activities for the community of Athboy.

The first major project that the group undertook was the re-establishment of the Fair Green as a site for community activity in the late 1990s. The project, which cost £100K and was run in partnership with the Fair Green Trustees, was funded by selling tickets for a prize draw and a Leader grant through Meath Partnership.

In 2003 ADF was approached by the Trustees of St. James Hall to help them fund and run a project refurbish the Hall which had fallen into disrepair. ADF obtained more Leader funding and borrowed the balance of the money needed to fund the restoration project. The group then ran an Annual Community Lotto from 2006 to 2015 to pay back the loan.

In 2009 the group obtained funding through Pobal’s Community Services Program to employ caretakers for St. James Hall. In order to qualify for this funding the groups had to set up a limited company and lease the Hall from the Trustees. Most of the committee became board members of the company.

ADF also established Athboy’s Twinning with the Autonne Villages and ran the twinning events for the first 5 years until Athboy Twinning Association was formed.

In November 2011, at the request of several local groups, the group negotiated a lease of the Convent Community Centre(CCC) with Meath County Council after it was handed over to them by the Order of Mercy.

Today the group run both St. James Hall and the CCC as community facilities. We have a subcommittee for each premises with representatives from the groups who use them.
